Eight Nigerian soldiers lost their lives on Saturday when their patrol vehicle struck a landmine allegedly planted by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in the northeast. The incident occurred during a routine security operation in an area known for frequent insurgent activity.
Military sources confirmed that the troops were conducting clearance operations when the vehicle hit the improvised explosive device. Emergency response teams were quickly deployed, and the injured were evacuated for medical treatment. The army has intensified searches for the perpetrators and increased patrols in surrounding communities.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and defence authorities have reiterated the commitment to dismantle terrorist camps following recent directives from President Tinubu. Operation Fansan Yamma and other coordinated frameworks continue to be strengthened across the North-West and North-East.
Community leaders in the affected region called for greater vigilance and support for security agencies. The military has promised a full investigation and additional protective measures for troops operating in high-risk zones.
