President Bola Tinubu has approved the procurement of additional train coaches and specialised security equipment to strengthen railway operations and counter banditry, kidnapping and vandalism along critical routes. The decision follows repeated attacks and disruptions that have affected both passenger and freight services in several parts of the country.
The new measures include enhanced surveillance systems, reinforced coaches and the deployment of better-trained security personnel to protect tracks, stations and passengers. Officials described the investment as part of a broader strategy to restore public confidence in rail travel and support economic activities that depend on efficient movement of goods and people.
Railway authorities and the Ministry of Transportation are expected to roll out the improvements in phases, beginning with high-risk corridors. Coordination with the military and police will be intensified to ensure rapid response capabilities. “Safe and reliable rail services are essential for national development. We are taking concrete steps to protect this critical infrastructure,” a senior transport official said.
Transport unions and business groups welcomed the announcement, noting that improved security would reduce reliance on roads, lower logistics costs and ease congestion. Further details on delivery schedules and the specific routes that will benefit first are expected to be released shortly as implementation plans are finalised.
